How to Choose Pendant Height Over an Island

1) Start with the comfortable clearance rule

For most kitchens, the bottom of a pendant looks and feels best when it hangs 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) above the island. This range balances headroom, sightlines, and task lighting.

If your island has bar seating, kids, or frequent traffic, lean higher (closer to 34–36"). If you want more focused task light, lean lower (closer to 30–32").

2) Convert clearance into a “bottom from floor” height

The easiest install reference is the height from the floor to the pendant’s bottom edge:

Bottom height from floor = Counter height + Clearance above counter

Example: a 36" counter + 32" clearance = 68" bottom height.

3) Estimate the drop length (ceiling to bottom)

Once you know the bottom height, compute the drop length:

Drop length = Ceiling height − Bottom height from floor

This helps you choose a pendant with the right cord/rod range, especially for 9–10 ft ceilings.

4) Avoid the most common mistakes

  • Too low: blocks the view, feels crowded, and can glare at eye level.
  • Too high: loses visual impact and can create harsh shadows on the work surface.
  • Ignoring pendant size: a tall shade needs a bit more clearance than a compact one.

Pendant Height Over Island FAQ

How high should pendant lights hang above a kitchen island?
A common guideline is 30–36 inches above the countertop (measured from the countertop to the bottom of the pendant). Adjust slightly based on seating, traffic, pendant size, and your preferred look.
What if I have a 9 ft ceiling?
You can usually keep the same 30–36" clearance, then choose a pendant with a longer adjustable drop. The calculator above will give you an estimated drop length from the ceiling to the bottom of the pendant.
Do I measure to the top of the pendant or the bottom?
For comfort and visibility, measure to the bottom edge of the pendant (or the lowest point if it has a finial).
